The hospice team at Jewish Senior Services consists of specially trained nurses, physicians, social workers, home health aides, clergy members, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists. The team works together to carefully manage pain and symptoms. They travel to wherever the patient is, whether that is the client’s own home, a family member’s home, an assisted living facility, or a long-term care facility. In addition, the hospice volunteers and trained professionals offer services for families that include emotional and spiritual support, light housekeeping, and grief counseling with a bereavement specialist.

Who Can Benefit from Hospice
Hospice is not solely for those in their final days of life. A patient can be eligible for hospice if they can no longer be helped by curative treatment and have a life expectancy of less than least six months. Hospice care is not meant to cure or treat the underlying disease, but intended to manage the symptoms to promote quality of life. Early hospice care can help the family and the patient throughout a difficult process. Seeking hospice assistance at early stages has proved to be very beneficial, as it not only ensures optimal comfort for the terminally ill person, but relieves the family of undue stress as well. Hospice creates a safe and warm environment which allows the family to focus on what times they still have together. Most of the hospice expenses are covered by Medicare.
